Description

Hello!

I wanted to do a matte painting from a sketch without references and this is the result. The idea behind it is a town at the edge of a huge rock that levitates because of some ancient magic. I always liked the idea of designing a fantasy kingdom, with mountains, forests, lakes and towns. :)
I used photos that I took in a trip to Thai as well as some that I found in the internet.

I used Photoshop.

Please, give me some feedback!

Wow! This is amazing. Those colors are great. The only little thing that I could possibly comment on would be the lighting. It appears that the sun is behind the clouds in the background, yet the front faces of the rocks are lit. Still, absolutely beautiful painting!

Thanks for the comments!!

DreamTheater : You are right. This is mainly a collage of lot of photographs placed together but also many parts are painted by hand. Maybe I should have put this on the photo manipulation section :p

I've never been one to get hung up on whether somethings a painting, photo manipulation or whatever...it's the image that counts and this is a great image!

I hope the magic that holds it up is pretty solid else that little bridge wont last long!

I don't think the lighting of the sky is so cohesive with the land area.... in a real photo the land area would be a lot more muted and your lighting is totally messed up anyways - your light source is behind that big flying rock, yet most of the rocks seems front lit, especially the castle on left. Even if it tried to depict a fantasy scene with multiple suns or something, you don't achieve such effect: lighting just confuses me at the moment, and doesn't give clear illusion of multiple light sources.

EDIT: spelling

I agree with Crow. The play of light over the land doesn't quite match the source(s). Great concept otherwise.

if I could give you more than a ten, I would

The fact that you look at it and feel like you're almost able to step into that world, is just amazing. The photography of the clouds is stunning, you caught them at the perfect time. Overall it's just so well done and put together seamlessly. And I don't agree with the above, isn't that what matte paintings are in general anyhow? Paintings done over photos. So you've done well!

My only question is why is there all that water coming off of it? It isn't like it can be just lifting into the air, it is after all attached to the other body of land.

man those clouds are fantastic

Thanks a lot for the comments. :)
cypherx: Thanks for the nice message!! The idea beyond the falling water is that the magic making the rock levitate made it produce some water from inside, as well as some air waves, hence the ripples on the water surface underneath it.
I think it was not a good idea, since it's difficult to understand. :p
